TAKE OFFENSE United States Of Mind

A long awaited order came in. All the incoming vinyl was TAKE OFFENSE records. I'm getting used to the Reaper Records standards of quality, but still realize it is again a job very well done. Artwork looks great, with according vinyl colors, silver, opaque green and ultra clear vinyl.

Also a promotional limited flexi was printed on clear green. It's actually the first time I see Reaper Records choosing for a flexi-disc format, and actually also my first experience with flexis.

A band can't wish for more I think with such a label. About the band now. They still play that hard hitting hardcore style, but now seem to have evolved to a smoother metal sound. A more Metallica influenced delivery I think. With groove that reminds me of Violation. Not so explicit but still recognizable.. I immediately got hooked when listening to the download.

Along with the other pre-orders came a live-series 7 inch, on color red. With a big hole and an illustrated booklet of photo's of the band members. Nothing extremely informative but still cool. My copy is numbered 63 out of 500.

Pressing Facts of Zero Tolerance "Fuel The Fire"

People seem to be unknowing about the why of the ringwear on this single. People also criticize Reaper Records for selling records with ringwear. It's kind of funny I think, that they think that the label stored them wrong or handled them badly. So the story behind the ringwear needs to be told I think.

When Guav was designing the layout he was inspired by firstly the artwork of the original tape release but also by the wear it had, showing the age and used condition of his tape. So he wanted to make the reissue look like that tape he owned. He wanted it also to look used and showing signs of age.

So Reaper isn't selling records that are damaged but it was totally intentional.

Intentional ringwear

It also exists on clear in a second pressing. Copies of the clear were given a different cover by UK's The Essence.

Fact is that the first 50 sold copies (pre-orders) had a screened poster included. I recently obtained this copy from a German that runs a beginning label. I didn't know it existed until I saw it mentioned is his selling list.

Hard to Stay Cold with these TIH presses

Just in is the one missing piece that was created to make my STAY COLD collection incomplete. No that's not true, it was made for This Is Hardcore festival 2013. And it's a well-done version I think. I'm actually so stoked about this that I'm posting it the same hour it arrived in my mailbox.

Anyway, the Stay Cold collection remains complete although on certain moment it seemed not to stay that way. I figured after a month of being in the mailing process it would never arrive and so me and the seller started an investigation with our countries postal services.

Anyway, enough chit chat already. The record looks awesome with the light blue to dark blue splatter forming a contrast together with the pink paint on the black and white printed cover. It's an eye-pleasing piece. It should have been this way, since it roughly the 5 years anniversary press. Also the 18th version created ever.

Anyway I won't do an updated collection shot. I'm guessing within ten years, when the 50th version is made, I'll reconsider doing that effort again...

Also from the awesome seller came the TIH 2013 press of the newest Turnstile ep... I already posted about this copy, but it's not exactly correct to state that, because the already featured copy is a personalized copy.

If there's anyone who has an incredible proposal I might consider trading this 'second' copy... and keep only the personalized one.

Black Sheep Squadron

Recently a seller on Discogs provided me the opportunity to buy the most limited color of the Black Sheep Squadron LP. Probably no one cares about this early Reaper Records release? But I needed it badly. I actually thought given the rarity of this record (out of 30 copies) I'd never find it.

White vinyl out of 30 copies

What's cool about this release is the fact that Reaper Records released this in cooperation with Organized Crime Records. Believe it or not but this record has got 2 pressings already. First press is subdivided in 4 colors and has a gatefold cover:

  • Red of 660 copies
  • Gray of 100 copies
  • Clear with red splatter of 100 copies
  • White of 30 copies
The second press is one of the ugliest LP colors I've seen. And also has no gatefold cover anymore.

This release is something for Wild Punx that like straight forward punk music. I'm talking about fast and pissed off punk music. Not unlike way back in the 70's. Back to the roots ...

Just the thing you need to start the weekend. They also bring a cover of Uniform Choice's "My Own Mind" at the end, paying homage to the straight-edge generation that paved the path for us.

Anyway this is not what you would expect to sound like, given both Reaper and OCR are real Hardcore labels. Anyway have a listen yourself:

Again Our Systems Are Overloaded

Last Sunday I helped Edward from Good Life Recordings with the first annual record-fair at cinéPalace in Kortrijk. It was all good fun and the cooperation went smooth as usual. I also got the opportunity to meet some of my local readers and share some words with them in person. What can I wish more for?

Recently I got some records in, two of the incoming records are related with each other by label. Many people know Organized Crime Records for the INTEGRITY releases. Those reissues got top treatment with varnish on the full color covers, accompanied by posters, colored vinyl variations, stamps, limited numbered editions, etc. I think it's a job very well done. So many people asked us at the recordfair for the new remix of Systems Overloaded. It seems that many people already know and actually want a physical vinyl copy of that remix.

I also wanted a copy and got one. It's already the third version that was sold. The first version was promptly reviewed here by Ezekiel (the second author of this blog). I invite you to check it out if you wish. The second version was part of the recordstore day pressing from this year on black. And the one I got is the latest or third run out of 550 copies on white vinyl.

integrity a2 orr mix reissue systems overload organized crime records vinyl lp

It's an awesome mix to say at least. Better than the first mix that was released by Victory Records. It seems that reissues of 90's classics get better and better with the new mixes. I also said here that the new production of the 1992 record, "Strike The Match" from Nations Of Fire is better that the original. While it seems that the Revelation remixes (like Break Down The Walls, ...) or Dischord remixes (like Out Of Step, ...) were better remained untouched.

Anyway I'll keep the second record that was related by label for the next post. Stay tuned!

Rot In Hell - Studies In Emerald

UK's ministers of the Holy Terror Church are back with a limited lathe cut featuring three acoustic covers.
A very special and ultra limited edition was sent out to their disciples, with only 31 pieces roaming the earth this was meant to be an ultra detailed package.

Spraypainted emerald envelope (example of stencil)
Three songs are featured on this special release that was a DIY project spinning from the mind of one of ROT IN HELL's members. From the packing to the inside of this mysterious package the Fan gets treated with nothing more than pure art.

Slip case cover and 7" cover/booklet
From the spray painted envelope to the bookstyle shaped hardboard slip cover and the actual 7" lathe cut with it's own booklet, no details were overlooked and every step of this production was planned without margin for error.

Additional flyer, thank you note and paper sticker
Next to the rare lathe cut some extras were added to make this a total treat, from the X ray that comes in the package to the flyers, thank you note and sticker and even a plastic cutout stencil to create your own iconic ROT IN HELL logo.

X ray of the ribcage
The booklet that serves as a sort of slip cover for the lathe cut contains some pictures of scenery and only holds the necessary info such as the titles of the tracks and the original artist and the name and details regarding the recording.

The featured songs have been around for quite a while as the recording dates back to 2010.
These gems must have been locked into a deep secure vault untill mankind was ready to witness their beauty.
That day has now come for 31 lucky Fans.

Stamped slipcover in according color
As mentioned before this release is not your typical ROT IN HELL release when you expect Holy Terror based UKHC, this one displays that other talent that makes ROT IN HELL one of the best bands in hardcore nowadays. It features three acoustic songs by artists that may or may not be linked closely to their own scene.

Inside of the booklet
Three covers by three different artists who have acclaimed fame years ago.
From THEATRE OF HATE  to JOHNNY CASH and THE MISFITS, three influential artists that get their own twisted interpretation by ROT IN HELL.

Page 1 of booklet
The acoustic songs are perfectly executed and sometimes the vocals come close to the originals.
This acoustic project is something that divides ROT IN HELL from all the rest, in between the Holy Terror madness and mayhem they can still provide a perfect song with nothing more than a voice and a guitar.

The detail regarding the recording and covered songs
Also the twist in lyrics is very funny, for example in the JOHNNY CASH cover Sixteen there is a part that speaks of Jack Abernathy summoning our protagonist to declare war on man and to spread the plague over the land.

Front and back of the booklet cover
That balance between the acoustic parts and the 'normal' hardcore sounds of ROT IN HELL is exactly the path these guys should pursue further on in their career and what sets them apart leading to an ever growing cult following worldwide. They even came up with a new genre for this : Neoterror!

Limited lathe cut featuring an insect X ray
Next to this special one off release there's also rumours regarding some new releases coming up.
Talk of another new album titled Halways Of The Always II are buzzing round and it seems that a label has been found so expect some new release soon featuring some unreleased songs all packed together in one neat album.

A gift of art
And if that wasn't enough they also are working on a split with Psywarfare that will feature three acoustic songs. So good things are coming our way, keep an eye out for these prophets of doom.
